Brant - At least three and possibly six birds within the thousands of Snow Geese rafting on the lake. Observed in flight from Point 18 as the Snow Goose flock was shifting and resettling, three small Cackling-size geese came into view each with an all black bill, face and neck against a seemingly white vent, rump and tail. At fist the birds were flying in my direction at ~ 45 degrees towards the southeast. I called out Brant to Travis and quickly attempted to get him on the birds amongst the throngs of Snow Geese in the air. Just as Travis was getting on the group, three others joined with the same field marks, but they quickly peeled away and we continued to follow the original three. By this time the birds were climbing to northeast and away from our position. As we discussed the geese, Travis also noted the white vent, rump and tail, but hampered by the costly lag-time of finding them, had trouble discerning the face and neck as the birds were moving ever further away within the chaotic flock. The enormous Snow Goose flock is a mainstay on the lake this time of year. The other four common wintering geese; GWFG, ROGO, CACG, and CANG will raft with the SNGO and aside from the ROGO, will generally stay at the periphery of the flock and are easily noted. Hopefully others can work the lake and with luck obtain some photos. These birds are light-bellied and likely B. b. hrota of eastern North America and western Europe.
